Mechelen Gate

Location monument: Leopoldlaan.

The Mechelen Gate, like the Brussels Gate, is a relic of the nineteenth-century town wall. It was built in 1822 with stones from Affligem Abbey, which was closed and demolished by the French in 1796.

Behind the gate is the old moat. You can still see the piers of the old stone bridge on the other side of the moat, which has virtually disappeared.
